Who regulates x-ray machines in Arizona
The Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of Radiation Control registers every radiation-producing machine in the state, from a dental intraoral unit to a hospital CT. Registration is per machine, carries a fee, and has to be current before clinical use. Dental, veterinary, chiropractic and medical machines all fall under the same bureau.
The shielding report comes before the drywall
Shielding design values come from NCRP Report 147, the national standard for medical x-ray imaging facility shielding (NCRP’s summary is here). A qualified expert, usually a medical or health physicist, takes your machine type, workload, room layout and what sits on the other side of each wall, and produces a report naming the required lead equivalence for every barrier: each wall, the door, any window, sometimes ceiling and floor.
That report is the contract for the construction. Installers do not choose lead thickness, and a room built by guesswork has no defensible basis if the survey or an inspection questions it.
What the installed work has to get right
- Lead lined gypsum board hung vertically, screws at 8 inches on center.
- Lead batten strips behind every joint so barriers overlap without gaps.
- Sheet lead backing behind every outlet, box and penetration in a shielded wall.
- Door frames wrapped in lead, lead glass set to the report’s equivalence.
- Documentation: material certs stating lead thickness, and photos of each assembly before it closes up.
Verification, then the machine goes live
After installation, the physicist surveys the finished room to confirm the barriers perform as designed. With a passing survey and current ADHS registration, the machine is ready for patients. Keep the report, certs, photos and survey together; they are the file future inspections, remodels and practice sales will ask for.
Common Arizona-specific wrinkles
- Concrete block walls, common in older East Valley buildings, carry shielding value the physicist can credit, sometimes eliminating added lead on that wall. Mention wall construction when the report is being written.
- Multi-tenant medical buildings change adjacency math. A wall shared with another tenant’s waiting room needs more protection than one facing your own storage closet.
